March of the penguins: Detroit penguins head to new Polk Conservation Center

Image 1 of 5

The Detroit penguins are on the move! On April 18, the largest penguin center in the world opens to the public but the animals are getting comfortable in their new home.

The Detroit Zoo marched the penguin's into the Polk Penguin Conservation Center - 33,000 square feet of penguin fun. The largest facility for penguins in the world features a 326,000 gallon, 25-foot-deep aquatic area for visitors to see more than 80 penguins explore the habitat.

But you're not just watching from the side. No. An underwater gallery and two acrylic underwater tunnels will allow views of the birds swimming above, around, and below!

It's going to be a hot ticket to get into such a cool place! Admission is free but it will be timed - so when it's time to go, it's time to go! The zoo does plan to have extended hours on April 23-24, April 30-May 1, and May 7-8.
