ORLANDO, Fla (WOFL FOX 35) - Florida Highway Patrol troopers are trying to find out why a driver went the wrong way on I-4, killing himself and a taxi driver.
The front end of a taxi and van are mangled after FHP troopers say the driver of the van went the wrong way on I-4 by Sand Lake Road. Merchant Faye Jourieh says, "It's horrible, people driving recklessly, it's always sad." Investigators say the accident happened at 3:30 Tuesday morning. They tell us 44 year old Fernando Clemente went eastbound in the westbound lanes of the highway. Sgt Kim Montes says, "A taxi cab was traveling the right way in the left lane, had no where to go and they collided."
Investigators say 39 year old Harold Fabre died. He had been working for Diamond Taxi for the last year.
The owner of the company didn't want to talk on camera, but says troopers notified him of the accident.
He tells us Harold was a good person and wants answers as to what happened.
Clemente also died in the head on collision. "We don't know if he made a u-turn on I-4 or came on the ramp the wrong way so we're still looking at that." Troopers say this may be an alcohol related accident. "We found a bottle of Hennessy in the van driver's, wrong way drivers front right seat. And there was a smell of alcoholic beverage coming from the vehicle, so we're waiting for toxicology, " Montes said.
Those who live around here say it's frightening. Business owner Faye Jourieh says, "It's very scary especially since it's right close by." Taylor Barraza agrees, "It's scary to know that people are out there and to get on the wrong way on the highway going the wrong way, it's very scary."
