Windermere Police make arrest in sexual assault case

- Windermere police officers on Wednesday made an arrest in an ongoing sexual assault case.

Darryl Patterson, 49, has been under investigation for over a year after video surfaced of several women in various stages of undress.  Those images were part of evidence in an unrelated fraud investigation.  Police began looking into these cases and attempted to identify and make contact with the women.

In April of last year, police were called to investigate an attempted sexual battery, after which a search was sought and obtained to collect evidence from Patterson's home.  "During the execution of the search warrant, computers, mobile phones, electronic media, and video cassettes were among the items seized as evidence," said Windermere Police Chief David A. Ogden.

Chief Ogden said an additional 28 recordings were recovered.   Investigators found cause to charge Patterson after one woman who was said to be in the video recordings was identified and had been contacted by a detective.  "The victim in this case, who was unconscious at the time of the video recorded assaults, was unaware of what occurred," Chief Ogden said.

Patterson is charged with unlawfully committing sexual battery (victim physically helpless to resist).

"At the time of this arrest, other female victims remain unidentified. The investigation into their identities, whereabouts, and well-being remains open and on-going," Ogden added.
