Volusia County to pay family of victim killed in drug raid
DELAND, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - Volusia County will pay half-a-million dollars to the family of an unarmed man, shot and killed last year. The County Council on Thursday voted unanimously to pay the settlement.
Investigators say a deputy, sent on a drug raid at a Deltona home, fatally shot 26-year-old Derek Cruice in the face. An anonymous tip came in telling deputies drugs were at the home. The deputy said Cruice put his hands together as if he had a gun, so the deputy fired. A grand jury chose not to indict the deputy on any criminal charges. Deputies found a half-a-pound of marijuana in the home, along with a scale and $3,000.
