Volusia County Sheriff warns of phone scam

Crooks are trying to scare you into paying hundreds of dollars.

Sheriff Mike Chitwood says someone is pretending to be from the Volusia County Sheriff's Office and calling people threatening to arrest them unless they pay up.

The phone is spoofed to look like a sheriff's office number.

The scammers tell the victims to go buy Moneypaks and then scratch off the cards to get the codes.

One resident was scammed out $1,500.

The sheriff is stressing that his deputies will never solicit funds.
