Volusia County city surveys road conditions with laser van

At some point in the next few weeks, you are likely to see a large, white van with flashing lights cruising your street if you live in Deltona. In fact, at some point you can find it on every street in the Volusia County city.

It has called a Road Surface Testing vehicle or R.S.T. The van is tricked out with a laser array, cameras and computers. The mission for its three crewmembers? Locating and marking every crack, depression and pothole on every street in Deltona's city limits.

"It helps us prioritize what roads need to be taken care of first." says Deltona spokesperson Lee Lopez.

The city also says it does it more accurately and at a significant cost savings. The News Station's Tom Johnson shows you how it works.
