Volusia County beaches closed due to tides, debris

Volusia County Beach Safety flew the double red flag on Tuesday, closing county beaches due to rough tides and excess debris.

"We will continue the double red for tomorrow and then we will re-asses for debris," said Captain Tamra Malphurs.

Malphurs says there is moderate to severe erosion throughout Volusia County beaches due to the current weather pattern. The beach will remain closed to driving as well for a few days.

"We are in the process of gathering all of the conservation poles now," she said.  "We lost about 90 percent of them out of the sand. We will need to wait for the surf and wind to subside before we can install the poles back on the beach."

There will be some beach walkovers closed due to damage, so Maphurs added that visitors should pay attention to pedestrian sign-age.
