ORLANDO, Fla. (FOX 35 WOFL) - One young Uber driver says he had the scare of his life early Sunday morning. Zack the driver is cut up and bruised and his car burned. Another man, Dontay Baxter, 21, is charged with carjacking.
“It was the most terrifying experience of my life,” said Zack, a college student who’s driving in his spare time to pay tuition.
Zach decided to work a long night cash in on Saturday night's Halloween festivities. Little did he realize he'd end up in the middle of real life horror.
Investigators say Zack picked up his last two passengers at the 7-Eleven on West Colonial and West Moreland around 2am Sunday morning. Orlando Police say the pair had entered an address on W.D. Judge as their destination.
“He was trying to get me to stop in front of the empty lot and it didn't register that's what he was trying to get me to do. I was just trying to get them to the house. That's when he started punching me,” said Zack.
He says he’s was helpless at that point.
“His friend either tried to wrap his hands around my neck or he was trying to hold me down. I wasn't sure. He gave up shortly and then ran away. The guy said his friend was going to go get a gun.”
Zack says he was pushed out of his car.
“He drove off, and I was trying to hang onto the window, then I fell on the street and rolled,” said Zack, as he showed us his hand that’s all scraped up and swollen.
OPD says Zack flagged down a good Samaritan who drove him to the nearest police station, where he reported what happened. Within minutes, officer spotted the car, but investigators say the driver, later identified as Baxter, wouldn’t pull over. OPD deployed stop sticks, but the driver kept going.
When OPD caught up with the car, it was on fire at All American Drive and Forest City Road.
“The front of the car was melted, phone is completely gone, my backpack was singed. I'm afraid I have a concussion. I don't know how long it's going to take me to mentally recover from this,” said Zack.
The right side of his face is swollen, and Zack says he’s been suffering bad headaches since he was attacked and robbed.
Orlando Police say the second suspect is still on the run.
