Two shot and killed in attempted home invasion in Cocoa

COCOA, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - Two men are dead after a home invasion Tuesday morning at 150 Peachtree Street, according to the Cocoa Police Department.

Department spokeswoman Yvonne Martinez said police got a 911 calls from the scene around 1:30 a.m. When they got to the scene they found the victim, 19-year-old Jaleen Malik Howard, and the suspect, 22-year-old Rahkwon Shiem Yarveez Oquendo, injured in the street, Martinez said.

Both men were taken to the hospital, where they were pronounced dead, she said.

According to Martinez three suspects, including Owundo, went to the Peachtree Street to rob Howard.
She said two suspects took off before police arrived.  

“He’s always been the type of person to protect his girlfriend and his family. I don’t blame him [for fighting back].  I’m just very upset about the people who did it,” Kamiyah Foster said of Howard. 

Crime scene investigators could be seen collecting evidence, including a handgun, from the street.
Investigators say they have talked to several witnesses, but as late Tuesday morning they had no information to release about the missing suspects or a motive for the home invasion.

Neighbor Renae Hooks said she was stunned to wake up and find a crime scene in the “good” part of Peachtree Street, which is up the hill from the Indian River.

“I’ve walked out here different times of night.  Never had an issue.  Never been afraid to go out. Never having to watch my back,” Hooks said.
