SANFORD, Fla. (WOFL-Fox35) - Florida Highway Patrol took stock of the damage after troopers said a Honda sedan smashed head-on into a Mercedes SUV, going the wrong way in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 4, near the exit to Sanford. They said the driver of the Mercedes tried to move out of the way, but it was too late.
The driver and passenger in the Honda were killed. Troopers said the victims were a 20-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman. FHP troopers said neither of them was wearing a seat belt.
The Mercedes driver did survive, with minor injuries. This all unfolded around four o'clock this morning.
FHP closed three miles of I-4 for hours to clear the mangled mess. Troopers said they are still looking into why the driver of the Honda was going westbound in the eastbound lanes.
They say the accident was still under investigation.
