Two cats rescued during mobile home fire

SUMMERFIELD, Fla. (FOX 35 WOFL) - The Marion County Fire Rescue reported via Facebook that during a mobile home fire on Monday afternoon, firefighters were able to save two cats.

They say that units were dispatched to reports of a residential fire located on SE 96th Court at 3:59 p.m. in Summerfield. The 911 caller reported that the house next door was on fire with both heavy smoke and flames showing. The neighbors broke open a window to save two kittens from the burning structure.

Upon arrival at 4:06 p.m., firefighters observed the working fire with flames self-venting through the roof. Crews entered the residence and aggressively attacked the fire. The fire had compromised the roof and ceilings in the mobile home, causing the ceiling to fall on firefighters.

Eventually, firefighters say they were able to extinguish the fire and called it under control at 4:30 p.m. The residents arrived home and informed firefighters that there were four cats still inside the structure. Firefighters were able to locate two of the cats. Both cats were administered oxygen with a pet oxygen mask. The search continues for the other two cats.

The cause of fire is under investigation by the State Fire Marshal's Office.
