MELBOURNE, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - Melbourne police dashboard camera video obtained by FOX 35 shows police trying to pull over a car with expired plates.
The teenagers behind the wheel crashed the car at Melbourne Ave and Babcock Street Thursday night. This same car was taken from an elderly woman as she was thrown out of her own car in her driveway last week.
"When officers got on scene, they noticed it had been crudely painted to a gold color. Then they realized after running the VIN that it was actually the vehicle that had been stolen," said Commander Sean Riordan with the Melbourne Police Department.
Turns out, it was 80-year-old Nancy's stolen blue Lincoln. Police say somebody crudely painted it gold to try to hide it. Nancy gave FOX 35 pictures of her now totaled car.
Riordan explained, "She was pulled out of the car and battered."
Police say the 16-year-old driver, and his 17-year-old passenger weren't badly hurt in the crash. They're facing charges tonight. A 14-year-old girl in the backseat was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. That teen isn't charged say police.
Riordan said, "It's a very unfortunate incident. It's not something that happens on the regular."
Nancy said her head is banged up, but she's doing OK for the most part Friday, adding she's glad those teens are caught. She said she is going to do things a little differently now. She's going to lock her doors and not talk to strangers.
