DELTONA, Fla. (FOX 35 ORLANDO) - A car surfing adventure left a 13-year-old girl with a swollen, bloody face, and sent her 20-year-old former friend, Alexia Heckendorn, to jail on a charge of child abuse.
“She looked like her face has been beat up with a bat or something. Initially I thought someone jumped her because of all the knots across her face,” said Shanika Brown.
Brown says she got a call from the girls who were with her daughter saying her daughter had been hit by a car, but she said she quickly learned it was all a lie.
“I was livid when I found out,” Brown said.
Deputies say the incident started across the street from Deltona Middle School. A few of Brown's daughter’s friends were meeting their ride home.
“My daughter was sitting on top of a car talking to people she thought was her friends and out of nowhere the girl hit the gas and took her down the whole road videotaped it the whole time thought it was funny until she got slung of the vehicle and hit the ground face first,” said Brown.
According to Heckendorn’s arrest affidavit, she and the other girls in the car told investigators they were going slow and that the victim thought it was fun, refusing to get off the car. Sheriff Chitwood tells The News Station video one of the girls posted to social media proves otherwise.
“The video clearly shows this isn't going at 1mph that they're going at a pretty good clip,” said Sheriff Chitwood.
Investigators say it was as Heckendorn tried to navigate a 90 degree curve that the victim flew off the car and slammed onto the road.
“She said when she woke back up, she was on the ground and blood was coming out of her face,” said Brown.
Brown says her daughter was left with a concussion, road rash and several knots on her face. She's thankful deputies are now holding Heckendorn responsible.
“This 20 year old is learning that when you do things like that there are consequences,” said Brown.
Heckendorn is out of jail on bond.
