School district considers dress code for teachers

- When you think of school dress code, you usually are talking about the students. But one local school district is proposing a new dress standard feature for teachers.

Volusia County Schools spell out exactly what their students can wear to class: collared shirts in white or school colors with basic bottoms.

But, with the teacher's contract currently up for negotiation, a dress code for teachers is being considered. They are suggesting only shirts with an approved school color and collar, no jeans or shorts except with permission, and no rips, tears, flip-flops, or yoga pants.

Union President Andrew Spar said that the proposed dress code for teachers comes as the union attempts to negotiate over pay and workload. The district is even proposing longer days for some.

The county is currently short about 100 full-time teachers.
