Police say man tried to grab child in parking lot

- Detectives with the Ormond Beach Police Department are trying to identify a man they say may have attempted an abduction of a 2-year-old child.

Authorities said the incident happened in the parking lot of the Publix.  After putting one child into a car seat, the mother turned around to get her second child from the shopping cart.  She told deputies that a man was reaching out with both arms extended towards the child, but he was startled when she turned around, and he ran to a silver car.

The man is described as Hispanic, between 30 and 40 years old, approximate 5 feet, 9 inches tall, with dark hair, facial hair, a thick build, last seen wearing a white T-Shirt.

The vehicle is described as an older silver 4-door passenger car, with heavily tinted rear windows. The tag possibly contains the letters "XJY".

Anyone who may have information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Ormond Beach Police Department.  Anyone who wishes to remain anonymous can call Crimestoppers at 1-888-277-TIPS (8477).
