Police: Pizza deliveryman delivers damage to Cocoa neighborhood

Police say a man was drinking before he recklessly damage a Cocoa neighborhood.

Police say James Dugan, 48, was given Sunday night off from his job as a pizza deliveryman at a Domino's, because business was slow.  His next move, they say, was not smart.

"He went to the liquor store," said Cocoa Police spokeswoman Yvonne Martinez. "He bought three large beers, sat in his car and drank them, and then decided to drive home."

Police say their 911 lines started lighting up with calls about a blue Honda Civic driving recklessly.

After a mile of swerving and smashing curbs on Peachtree Street, police say Dugan made a dangerous turn. They say he drove onto a homeowner's lawn, plowed through a fence, into the neighbors yard and then back out onto the street.

"Fortunately, nobody was in the path that he could run them over, because in all likelihood, he would have hit somebody if they were," Martinez added.

Police say the man's wild ride finally ended after a mile in a parking lot on Clearlake Avenue. They say they found him slumped over the steering wheel.

"He was unresponsive, slurring his words, the officers described the odor coming from the vehicle as reeking of alcohol."

Police say Dugan told them he was also on medication. He has been booked into the jail on six criminal charges, including DUI with property damage, leaving the scene of an accident with property damage, and eight different traffic citations.
