Parents worried about Brevard County drinking water

In two days, kids in Brevard County will hit the books, but parents are worried the water in their drinking fountains won't be safe, as cancer causing chemicals were found in the groundwater of Satellite and Cocoa beach.

Health officials are now investigating a possible cancer cluster among Satellite High School. Out of an abundance of caution, the school system chose to have the water tested at nine schools, but the results from Satellite High School are still inconclusive. Officials say they want the water tested again.

People want to know if something in the water could be making them sick. So, the Brevard County School System tested the water at several beachside schools. Officials say they found trace levels of a contaminant in the drinking water at nine schools in Brevard County. But according to federal guidelines, the water is still safe.

This all comes after a report on Patrick Air Force Base showed the groundwater was contaminated with high levels of cancer causing chemicals. The compounds are in a foam that is used by firefighters on base.

While school officials say they are confident the drinking water at Brevard County Schools is safe to consume, they are having the water at Satellite High School tested again as a precaution.

Those results from the re-testing are still pending. Satellite Beach city officials say it is too early to determine the exact impact of the chemicals detected in the water, but they say they plan to do more testing.

The Air Force is dismissing any possible health impacts from their ground water because the drinking water for beachside communities is piped in from another city.
