Palm Bay fired contained, authorities say

A fire that threatened home in Palm Bay is now contained, authorities say.  Firefighters responded to the area of Cogan and San Filippo drives late Wednesday afternoon to discover that two homes were damaged by flames.

Officials said the blaze began as a brush fire that consumed an estimated 45 acres.  Cliff Frazier with Florida Forest Service said crews will remain in the area through the night to monitor for any flare ups.  Frazier said 100 homes were in jeopardy at the peak of the fire and two additional homes also were damaged. Strong winds, dry conditions and very little humidity were all perfect conditions for the fire to spread, he said.
