Oviedo to spend $950K on parking lot

The City of Oviedo has added $50,000 to its parking lot for Oviedo on the Park, bringing the total amount for the contract to more than $950,000.  Oviedo in the Park is the city's massive new development that will serve as the town center. It has an amphitheater that can seat at least 3,000, a playground, park space, fountains and swan boats. It's been a dream for Mayor Dominic Persampiere.

"Oviedo on the Park has proven to be just the perfect gathering place for our community," he said.

In order to realize the full dream, the city needs more than 300 parking spaces. There are several factors, according to the mayor and city staff, as to why this parking lot costs so much -- the biggest being its size. The city will pave more than three acres so that Oviedo on the Park can host larger events.

The city had to deal with wetlands, drainage, and even the Americans With Disabilities Act to even be able to build the parking lot. Persampiere says these things must be done. "Any government regulations whether it's private sector building something, or it's government, we all have to

City Council added the extra $50,000 to the project, because they have decided three electrical outlets on each lighting pole will suit the city's needs. One will be at ground level so that vendors can use them when the city holds events in that parking lot. Another outlet will be several feet up the pole so that the city can easily power electrical displays during holidays and special events.
