Orange Co. deputies hosting blood drive for severely injured Brevard Co. deputy

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office is hosting a big blood drive to help a Brevard County Sheriff's deputy shot during an undercover investigation.

The blood drive for Deputy John Casey Smith will be at the Orange County Sheriff’s Office on West Colonial Drive from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Deputy Smith was shot while trying to make an arrest last Thursday night when he and a team of deputies were in a Port Saint John neighborhood of Cocoa serving a warrant for prostitution when he was shot in an "ambush”.

The Sheriff's Office says Smith was wearing a bullet proof vest and was hit at least twice by gunfire during the attack including the area near his lower abdomen.

A blood drive was held for Deputy Smith Saturday in Titusville following his initial surgeries where more than 200 people donated blood including a law enforcement officer from Georgia who drove in from Daytona while on vacation to help.
For those planning to donate blood make sure you eat within four hours of donating and drink plenty of fluids prior to and after making a donation.
