Ocoee PD posts top red light violations

Ocoee Police has started posting videos of people whizzing through red light camera intersections. Each video is more dangerous and scary than the last.

All it takes is a few seconds on the road to cause a crash. Red light crash after red light near-crash are now being blasted on Facebook by Ocoee Police.

“A lot of people really get an education about how bad some of these violations are,” said Ocoee Police Deputy Chief Stephen McCosker.

That education stems from these videos Ocoee Police is now releasing monthly, highlighting its top ten red light camera violations.

“We have to be more aware when we're in intersections,” said McCosker.

Ocoee Police say they had about 6000 red light camera violations last year alone. That’s roughly 16 a day.

“Today a lot more people are just distracted driving and sometimes that's why these accidents are caused.”

In just three days, Ocoee Police’s July video has been shared 42 times and seen by more than 3000 people. It ends with dash cam video at an intersection without red light cameras, proving that some drivers are so unaware, they don’t even see the cop car near them when they whiz through a red light.

Ocoee Police says they hope these videos serve as an eye-opener.

“Before you start proceeding into an intersection, it's still a good idea to go ahead and check before going into an intersection”

There are five intersections with red light cameras in Ocoee. Ocoee Police plan to add five more in the next six months.
