ST. CLOUD, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - The first Central Florida nursery approved to grow and sell medical marijuana delivered its first product to a 25-year-old St. Cloud patient Friday afternoon.
The small package containing a vape pen and a cannabidiol oil from Knox Nursery in Winter Garden brought a world of hope the young man and his mom, who asked to be identified only by their first names.
"It's amazing. I call it his miracle medicine,” said mom, Connie.
Her son, Matt, has struggled all his life with Crohn’s Disease and body spasms. Doctors don’t know what causes them.
The conditions have progressed in recent years, diminishing him to a 115 pounds and leaving him homebound.
The medical marijuana is meant to ease the stomach spasms that make it difficult for Matt to eat.
"The spasms do not allow the food to stay in his body. He has such a rapid system that everything goes right through him,” Connie said.
The cannabis won’t make Matt high, but Connie sad it has changed his outlook.
"My son had given up. My son didn't want to live anymore. And it think that this medicine is giving him faith,” she said.
Matt got the first dose of cannabis produced and delivered by Knox Nursery in Winter Garden, one of just five businesses originally licensed to sell medical marijuana under the current law, but it isn’t his first round of medical marijuana medicine.
He’s used products from operations that got up and running before Knox Nursery.
Connie said the cannabis allowed her to take Matt to the doctor without having to sedate him so that he could tolerate the ride: "He rode all the way to Jacksonville and we had a conversation.”
She said she cried when they got home.
“Normally I was in tears because I had watched him suffer for 8 hours. But these were tears of joy. And I can’t say how excited I am that we have maybe found something that is going to help him.”
