ORLANDO, Fla. (FOX 35 ORLANDO) - A major traffic shift in the heart of downtown Orlando that drivers should be aware of.
Starting Wednesday, the new temporary ramp on Amelia Street is open for traffic.
#TRAFFIC ALERT: Downtown #Orlando drivers will notice a change at the I-4 EB exit to Amelia Street. There is now a new temporary off-ramp that will stay in place for the next 18 months. It's a big change for about 12-thousand drivers who use this ramp every day. The new exit point is just past Amelia Street and will place drivers on a separate travel lane.
I-4 Ultimate officials say the reason for closing the ramp is to allow crews to get in and do work right where traffic exits.
The good news is that the ramp will come back in about 18 months.
"When we're all said and done, we'll still have access to Amelia Street. We'll also have brand new access to Colonial Drive. That's an access that did not exist prior to the start of construction," said Dave Parks with FDOT.
Officials say the overall goal is to improve how traffic moves throughout the entire 21-mile project, especially in downtown Orlando.
It may take a few days for drivers to adjust to the changes so officials want to remind drivers to slow down.
