VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. (FOX 35 ORLANDO) - Volusia County schools have a new schedule this year.
Elementary schools will start around the same time, 7:50 a.m. However, they will add an extra 30 minutes to their day to allow for state-mandated recess.
Meanwhile, high schools will now begin class at 8:30 a.m., which is an hour later than last year.
Middle schools now begin at 9:30 a.m., as some studies show that a later start time is better for student learning.
The idea behind these changes was to give younger students more time in school and high schoolers more time to sleep.
