ORLANDO, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - He is a sitting congressman running for the United States Senate. She is a doctor running for his seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. Alan Grayson and his brand new wife, Dr. Dena Minning Grayson, are Central Florida's newest power couple, and they spoke to FOX 35 about their marriage over Memorial Day Weekend.
We asked Congressman Grayson if marrying Dena means his life is settling down after a rough and tumble series of attacks in the U.S. Senate race he has endured, that includes the press over the annulment of his first marriage, and the beating he's taken for running a hedge fund while being a member of Congress.
"That's not where voters' heads are at at all. Look, the bumpy ride, the bumpy ride as you put it, is irrelevant to the voters. The voters don't care about that. Here in Orlando, we are 50th out of 50 in wages for the 50 largest cities in the country," said Rep. Grayson.
Rep. Grayson lashed out at his Senate opponent Patrick Murphy, saying he's a trust fund baby, when we asked him if he was upset that President Barack Obama would be in Florida raising money for Murphy's bid.
"The establishment definitely wants somebody they can control," he said.
Dr. Dena Grayson wants to replace Alan in Congress, running for his District 9 seat that covers East Orange and Osceola counties. We wanted to know why she had refused all interviews to this point?
"The biggest reason is that the voters have been focused on other things, primarily they've been focused on the presidential primary process."
Having taken the last name of Grayson as soon as she married Alan raised some eyebrows. We asked her if she was capitalizing on the Grayson name, or using him for political advantage?
"It's a fair question, but the honest answer is when Alan and I first contemplated getting married, long before he even considered running for the Senate, it wasn't even an option at the time, I had actually offered to him that I wanted to change my name. It wasn't something Alan asked me to do. I'm proud to be a part of the Grayson family."
The couple came to FOX 35 as newlyweds, so we asked Alan Grayson what he saw in her. He gushed about her work as a doctor and medical researcher.
"She's got a head and a heart, and I love that."
The same question for Dena Grayson?
"Alan could do a lot of things with his life that would probably be personally more rewarding potentially, certainly financially more rewarding, but instead Alan has chosen to serve others. And that's something that I admire tremendously. I respect him. I love him. He's my best friend. I'm very lucky."
The couple would not say when or where they would honeymoon. Dr. Dena Grayson did tell us she hopes it will be in November after both won their respective races.
