Mother of Winter Park shooter gave police his location

WINTER PARK, Fla. (FOX 35 WOFL) - A man who opened fire on another man near Rollins College on Monday faced a judge on Tuesday. 

Police say that the Winter Park shooting suspect, 19-year-old Jerad Christopher Vasquez, was caught on surveillance video inside a Goodwill store. He is accused of shoplifting before shooting an innocent man and firing several shots at police, setting off a seven hour manhunt. 

Vasquez lived with Greg Palermo, who says that "he was like a stray. He would come and go like the wind." The 19-year-old was already on probation for stealing car keys. Palermo kicked him out last week for getting violent.

According to Vasquez's arrest affidavit, a Winter Park Police Sergeant responded to the Goodwill after noticing Vasquez walking down Orange Avenue around 2:40 p.m. on Monday. That sergeant drove towards Vasquez when she saw him shoot a bystander in the groin before firing three shots at her. Two of those hit her windshield, with the other hitting the hood of her car. Vasquez fired another three to four shots at another officer before taking off.

At 4:27 p.m., investigators say that Vasquez's mom called police, alerting them her son messaged her saying he was "surrounded by cops" and that "he was not going to jail" and that he was scared. Vasquez's mom also sent police a locator, showing Vasquez at Full Circle Yoga just down Orange Avenue. The entire area shut down for hours, with Rollins College even issuing a 'Shelter in Place' notification, telling students to find the nearest room and lock it. 

Police finally found Vasquez hiding under a trailer, but he did not give up easy. Investigators say they exchanged fire before finally taking him into custody around 9:30 p.m.

Vasquez is being charged with three counts of Attempted First Degree Murder and the judge has denied him bond. On Wednesday, a probation violation charge was added.
