Man accused of crashing Maserati into MacDill AFB gate

A Tampa man faces multiple charges after police say he rear-ended a vehicle and fled the scene, crashed into the gates of MacDill Air Force Base and drove recklessly up and down MacDill Avenue Monday afternoon.

Tampa police got involved when an off duty officer said he saw a Maserati speeding on MacDill Ave. near Marcum Street. The witness told officers the Maserati pulled into a parking lot near the intersection.

When officers arrived, they found 44-year-old Andres Alvarez, who lives on Sandpiper Road in Tampa, passed out behind the wheel with the car left running. Officers removed him from the car and placed him under arrest.

Officers later realized Alvarez may have been behind a hit-and-run earlier Monday near Bayshore Boulevard and Alline Ave. West, where a driver said their vehicle was rear-ended and the suspect drove away.

Officers also suspect Alvarez crashed into the MacDill Air Force Base gates Monday before his arrest.

Alvarez faces charges of DUI, leaving the scene of a crash with property damage and leaving the scene of a crash with injury.
