Lakeland woman charged in death of her lover
LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) - Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd says a Lakeland woman accused of drugging and killing a man with whom she had an affair has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder.
The Ledger reported Wednesday that 58-year-old Virginia Collins went to elaborate lengths to throw suspicion off of her, even contacting one of its reporters with a false story.
Detectives say Collins, who is married to another man, slipped the 65-year-old Gary Greenfield a sedative. The murder investigation was launched after Greenfield's body was found by a handyman. Collins and Greenfield had known each other since she was a teen. Judd said her husband didn't know that Greenfield was living in the couple's rental apartment.
Collins is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday. It's unclear if she's retained an attorney.
