Lake County shelter over capacity due to Irma, offers $10 adoption fee

There are 225 dogs at the Lake County Animal Shelter barking for attention, hoping for a new home. LCAS  says they'll make a good deal on a new best friend.

"Our adoption fee is only $10. That's includes their initial vaccines, de-worming, rabies, tag microchip, heartworm of parvo test spaying neutering. Cats are $10 and you always get the second one free and that includes a lifetime of love. So we def encourage everybody even if you're not local come down to Lake County and adopt your new best friend," said spokesperson Whitney Boylston.

Right now, they are 75 dogs over capacity, with some pups forced to bunk up with others.  "

The space is an issue, so is the time to care for so many animals, so we're limited with our staff and our resources so it puts a strain on the entire shelter system when it's this far over capacity," said Boylston.

New four-legged friends are coming in by the day, some from animal control others being born at the shelter. Aubrey, a mixed breed, just gave birth to seven cuties Monday.  Blame Hurricane Irma too.  Some of these dogs got loose in the storm.

"We have a large population of stray animals that are waiting for their parents to come and get them," said Boylston.  "We have another population of animals who's pet parents were not able to take them with them when they left or they aren't able to return to their homes, their homes may not be livable so they aren't able to keep their animals so we have those dogs and cats here as well,"

The Lake County Animal Shelter is trying to get glamour shots of each of these gals and guys, hoping one of these sweet faces catches the eye of someone looking for some puppy love.

"So we def encourage everybody even if you're not local come down to lake county and adopt your new best friend," said Boylston.

And if you're in the market for a cat, they're BOGO.  Buy one for $10, get one free.
