K-9 presence increased at Orlando airport

Millions of people are screened at Orlando International every year, and not just by humans, K-9s have joined the workforce.

“We could get the volumes that we did by expediting 12 million passengers. Expediting screening means that they went past our passenger screening K-9, allowing us to make those people low risk," says Federal Security Director, Jerry Henderson.

Transportation Security Administration pre-check isn't the only way to expedite screening at OIA. During “peak hours” passengers will see trained K-9s at security checkpoints. Each passenger screening K-9 is accompanied by a TSA agent looking for cues. The K-9 uses its keen sense of smell and extensive training to sniff out anything related to a bomb.

Airport officials say their security measures are seen and unseen. While a passenger screening K-9 smells your shoes and devices, you're also being watched by a behavior detection officer. All the while, you keep your shoes on and your laptop inside your carry on.

For security purposes, TSA officials wouldn't reveal how many K-9s they have or at which airports across the nation they have them working.
