Hospitals report unusually high number of motocross injuries during Bike Week
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) - Hospital officials say they treated an unusually high number of injuries from motocross races at Daytona International Speedway during the city's annual Bike Week.
Many of those injured were children, officials at Halifax Health Medical Center and AdventHealth Daytona Beach said in a Daytona Beach News-Journal report.
AdventHealth Infield Care Center spokeswoman Lindsay Cashio said the facility inside the speedway saw 88 riders over seven hours during the Amateur Supercross. Cashio said many riders had multiple fractures requiring surgery.
Halifax Health Medical Center trauma manager Lindsay Martin said "a lot of kids" were among 35 riders treated for head injuries and broken arms, legs and ankles.
Outside the speedway, hospital officials said the number of Bike Week injuries and deaths has dropped, partly due to an increased police presence and a larger number of riders wearing helmets.
