Hillsborough commissioners to discuss Confederate flag
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Two Hillsborough County commissioners will debate whether the Confederate flag is a symbol of hatred and discrimination or an indelible part of the nation's history.
The Tampa Tribune reports commissioner Les Miller wants the Confederate flag removed from the lobby of the county center in downtown Tampa.
The banner is displayed with four other flags that have flown over Florida.
Miller says he'll soon seek support from the board's other six members for the flag's removal.
At least one of Miller's colleagues disagrees. Stacy White says the commission shouldn't make such a controversial decision in the charged atmosphere that's gripped the nation since nine black church members were murdered in Charleston, S.C. on June 17, Instead, White proposed the county hold a referendum on the issue in November 2016.
