Girl, 10, believed to have been bitten by shark at Sebastian Inlet

SEBASTIAN INLET, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - Officials say they responded to two probable shark bites in Brevard County on Monday.  They say one bite was severe, and the victim is a 10-year-old girl.

According to Brevard County Fire Rescue, the child was swimming when something, likely a shark, bit her on the calf.  Crews say the wound was six inches, and the girl had to be airlifted to Arnold Palmer Hospital in Orlando.

“I hope that she’s alright – hope everything is okay,” said David Smith, who lives near where it happened off A1A in south Melbourne Beach.

Just hours before, emergency responders say they were called to a different area of the beach near Ocean Avenue.  They say a 21-year-old woman was bit on the hand but didn’t want to go to the hospital. Once again, they say it looks like a shark did it.

Smith says he’s been seeing a lot of sharks in the area lately, but living in Brevard County, he’s pretty used to it.

“I’m alarmed but I’m not afraid of it,” he said, explaining he still goes in the water.

But the news of two bites in one day has a New Jersey family on vacation on edge.

“My girls may not go back in the rest of the week if they find out,” said Eileen Flaherty.

Officials say no one saw the shark in either case. After both incidents, the beaches were temporarily cleared.
