Eatonville town council keeps Thomas as vice mayor after Grant's suspension

- The Town of Eatonville has been in turmoil over who will run the city after former mayor Anthony Grant was arrested and suspended from office amid charges of election fraud.  “I worry about him, but as a human I pray for him, cause everybody makes mistakes,” said resident Greg Steele.

At Tuesday’s city council meeting the mayor’s chair remained empty as council members squabbled over who would be vice mayor and therefore assume the duty of mayor in the interim.

After a tied vote to appoint councilman Eddie Cole as vice mayor didn’t move forward, per the city charter Vice Mayor Angela Thomas remained in that position, despite her term having expired. “We really don’t have a vice mayor when you have any opportunity to read it, somebody can come back the next week or the next council meeting and say it, because they’re holding that position because it’s an annual position,” said Councilman Eddie Cole.

Council members say the historic town of Eatonville will continue to prosper despite the confusion.  “We’re going to fight for our town, we want to get along but we’ve got to do it right,” said Councilman Theo Washington.

There could also be a special election at a later date.
