ORLANDO, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - A fatal shooting involving a deputy with the Orange County Sheriff's Office has prompted road closures around the 600 block of Delhi Street and West Colonial Drive in Orlando. Commuters are advised to avoid the area.
The incident began around 2:40 p.m. as a residential burglary, according to Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings. Two suspects were believed to be involved in that alleged burglary. A confrontation ensued and gunfire was exchanged between the suspects and the homeowner, the sheriff said.
"Upon our arrival, a K9 deputy observed one of the suspects matching the description. The suspect, who was a 27-year-old female with short cropped hair, was armed with a handgun, at which point the deputy fired," said Demings.
The woman was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where she was pronounced deceased. Her identity has not been released. Silva said a gun was recovered nearby, after the woman was shot.
A second suspect is being sought by deputies. That suspect is described a black man, wearing a white shirt and black shorts. A perimeter is set and this remains an active scene, according to the Sheriff's Office.
As is standard procedure with shootings involving deputies, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is on scene and conducting an investigation.
