Dashboard camera video clears driver in alleged hit-and-run crash

- The Florida Highway Patrol says a personal dashboard camera that you can get online or at an electronics store for around twenty bucks could save you big money in damages -- or even keep you out of jail.

In the dramatic video, a blue Ford Mustang is seen sliding across the road, over the median, and into the opposite lane, smashing into an SUV.  FHP at first suspected the driver that recorded the dashcam video of causing the deadly wreck.

“It showed that he was not actually involved in the crash, itself,” said FHP Lt. Timothy Freebern.

The driver's lawyer released the video to troopers hoping to exonerate his client.

“It's proof,” agreed Lt. Freebern, “it shows that there was no contact.”

Orlando defense attorney Baolinh Than said everyone should have one in their cars.

“After a client got a favorable result after using a dashcam, I went out and bought two - one for me, one for my wife,” Than said.

A quick search online shows thousands to choose from, with prices starting at ten dollars. They're simple to hook up and use.

“You can get them for under fifty dollars, and they might save you a year of a potential personal injury case,” Than said.

Highway Patrol says they're still investigating the crash, but thanks to the driver's video, they say he's now only considered a witness to the accident.
