Cocoa police investigate apparent 'murder-suicide'

Detectives and crime scene technicians with the Cocoa Police Department are at the scene of a shooting that appears to be a murder-suicide, according to investigators.

Just after 5 p.m. on Monday, patrol officers responded to a report of a shooting at the 700 block of South Georgia Avenue.  When officers arrived they found man with a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Officers received information that the deceased male's estranged wife went to the home and shot him after an argument," said police spokesperson Yvonne Martinez.  "There were multiple witnesses inside the home during the shooting, including two young children. The woman reportedly fled the scene."

Officers spotted and then followed the woman to Lee Wenner Park. The first officer behind her reported hearing a gun shot just prior to the car going into the water under the 520 Causeway.  Officers and deputies attempted to rescue the woman, but  she was pronounced dead on scene.

Detectives are currently interviewing witnesses and gathering evidence from both scenes. The children that witnessed the shooting are being cared for, according to Martinez.  The identities of the suspect and victim will be released when next of kin have been notified. The investigation is ongoing.
