Authorities say a child was struck by a car in east Orange County late Tuesday afternoon and rushed to the hospital.

The child, a 14-year-old girl, was walking her bicycle on the sidewalk with a friend, on the west side of Dean Road.  Investigators said a driver lost control of his vehicle and veered onto the sidewalk, striking the girl and grazing her friend.

It happened around 4:30 p.m. near River Park Blvd.

Investigators said the SUV overturned against a wall, and the driver exited the vehicle and ran into a nearby wooded area.  A K-9 with the Orange County Sheriff's Office was able to track down the driver, who was hiding in a lake.  That man has been identified as Travis Rhys Johnson, 19.

Authorities said Johnson was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of a crash with serious bodily injury and driving without a license.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, there was a warrant out of Johnson for fleeing and alluding a trooper last July on a motorcycle with a stolen tag.  Authorities also believe the SUV and the tag on the vehicle to be stolen and charges are forthcoming.

The child was rushed to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children as a a trauma alert.  She is in critical but stable condition.
