B-CU honor student killed in fatal shooting

- Classmates of an honor student from Bethune-Cookman University are mourning his loss, after he was fatally shot.

Friends of 23-year-old Herb Johnson are heartbroken. They say he had been promoting an artist in Orlando and was at the Waffle House after the event, early Monday morning, when the shooting occurred.

Deputies say he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Witnesses say a fight broke out in the parking lot and Johnson got hit by a stray bullet as he was leaving the restaurant.  Johnson had just graduated in December as an honor student and was an incredible person, his friends say.

“He was an amazing man, so humble and confident and excited about life. He had a passion for success and always wanted to do better in life," classmate Randolph Black says.  "It hurts to see another friend, brother, son is taken away from us."

Friend Herbert Dalusom says his friend was an aspiring business owner.

"He was planning on buying property. He was opening up a studio, he normally gives back to his community. He’s motivated,” he says.

Rosemary Jenkins agrees, adding, “He was just a genuinely nice guy, very debonair. Everything about him was good. He meant good in the community. He was an excellent college student, didn’t cause any problems. I was crushed to hear he had passed.”

Classmates created shirts in memory of Johnson, to help raise money for funeral expenses.

Deputies are still looking for the suspects in the shooting.  If you have any information call Crimeline at 800-423-TIPS (8477).
