LEESBURG, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - Police are investigating after a 4-year-old boy was accidentally shot by his father early Wednesday morning.
Police responded just before 2 a.m. to the Stock subdivision after a report of shots fired in the area. While searching the area they found a vehicle with two bullet holes in the windshield parked at a home on Berwick Drive.
Police say 24-year-old Herbert James came out of the home and was being belligerent and uncooperative with officers before going back inside the home. Shortly afterward officers heard a gunshot from inside the home and they immediately went inside.
Once inside, police say officers saw James holding a gun and another woman with a 4-year-old who had been shot. Officers ordered James to put the gun down and another officer began treating the gunshot wound on the child.
Detectives say that James was handling the gun in his bedroom when it accidentally went off, where the bullet traveled through through the wall and into his son's bedroom, hitting the child while he was sleeping.
James was arrested and charged with Aggravated Child Abuse and two counts of Possession of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony.
