Tow truck driver accused of stealing debit card from dead man's car

-
Giovanni Canicatti was arrested Wednesday at the tow truck yard where he worked.  He’s accused of stealing from a man who had just died in a car crash.

Canicatti stole a debit card on October 26 belonging to Robert Sullivan, a 60-year-old New Smyrna Beach resident who had died just a few hours earlier in a car crash.

Canicatti was the tow truck driver who pulled Sullivan's car off State Road 44 and Prevatt last week after the tragedy.

Canicatti says he spent $1,700 on two of his car payments and an order of car parts. Money that deputies say the widow was hoping to use for her husband’s burial.

It's that order that led Deputies to Canicatti. They say when he paid with the stolen card number he made a big mistake: Canicatti used a fake name, but gave his real phone number.

When FOX35 News talked with Canicatti today at his home he said he wanted to come clean and apologize to the family.

"I just had bills. Like, my car. My car was late,” Canicatti said. “I would ask for them to forgive me because I had no right going through their possessions, touching something. They didn’t belong to me anyway. I made a mistake and it will never happen again."

Cannicatti is currently out on bond and facing three felony charges.
