1 teen drowns, another found intoxicated

Lake County investigators on Thursday released the identity of a teenager found unresponsive in a backyard swimming pool a day earlier.

Deputies responded to a home in the Lake Mack area of DeLand regarding a drowning on Wednesday.  Deputies learned that the homeowner's 15-year-old daughter had a 16-year-old female friend visiting.  The homeowner returned from work in the evening to find his daughter's friend,  Autumn Thompson, at the bottom of the family's swimming pool.

"Apparently, the father ... jumped in, pulled the young lady out, and tried to perform CPR to no avail, and she was pronounced dead at the hospital in DeLand," said Lt. John Herrell with the Lake County Sheriff's Office

The 15-year-old was in stable condition.

"I said, 'Well, you be careful,' and she said, 'I will. I'm having so much fun,' and that was the last thing she said to me," explained Sue Thompson, Autumn's grandmother.  Thompson raised the girl from a very young age. "I've had her since she was  6 years old," she said.

Autumn attended Umatilla High School and loved the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC). Her grandmother said she had big plans. "She was going to finish school down here, and then she was going to go in the Navy."
