1 dead after being struck by SunRail train

Authorities are investigating after a person was struck and killed by SunRail train.

The incident happened around 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon along southbound tracks at Stratemeyer Drive, north of the Sand Lake Road station.  There were 110 people on the train at the time; however, no injuries have been reported on the train.

The victim was not identified but described as a white man in his 50s.  He was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The train engineer sounded his horn several times to alert the victim," said Jane Watrel, with the Orange County Sheriff's Office, "however, the victim did not heed the warning and refused to get off the tracks."

A bus bridge was set up between Sand Lake and Orlando Health stations, but northbound and southbound trains were up and running by 5:30 p.m.

"Train service delays may occur throughout the evening, due to the earlier disruption," said Steve Olson, Florida Department of Transportation spokesman.
