Human remains found in Merritt Island park

Homicide detectives are investigating after human remains washed up in the Indian River in Brevard County this weekend.

A passerby found the remains in a shallow part of the Indian River in Waterway Park, near the Merritt Island Causeway Saturday morning.

Locals watched as Brevard County dive experts spent Saturday searching for clues.

"I'm kind of shocked there's a body washing up on the shore," said Joseph Kirk, who anchors his sailboat nearby. "That's pretty strange."

The details of the discovery are murky, as little is being released about the body. Investigators haven't released the condition of the remains or the sex of the person who died.

The Medical Examiner is working to identify the remains and determine how long the person was in the water.
