Explosion reported at GM Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant

Emergency crews are rushing to the Hamtramck assembly plant after a report of an explosion inside the plant.

The call for the reported explosion came in around 10 a.m. Wednesday. The plant is located in Hamtramck just north of I-94 and east of I-75.

Police initially said there "multiple victims", indicating three or more people were injured. Around 10:30, the fire department told FOX 2 that just one person was injured and this was 'not a major incident' and that they are downgrading from 10 fire engines on the scene to three. 

FOX 2 spoke with General Motors who said that three people were injured and one person was transported to the hospital.

The extent of the injuries is unknown at this time. 

FOX 2's Erika Erickson learned from authorities there that a filter pump on a rust inhibitor tank exploded.

GM said that they were performing general maintenance inside the plant at the time of the incident. 

General Motors released this statement regarding the incident:

"Emergency personnel are currently investigating an incident that occurred at the GM Detroit-Hamtramck plant before 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 5. Three people, who were involved in maintenance work at the plant, were injured in the incident. The injuries are not believed to be life threatening."
