Baby wombat growing up at Chicago Zoo

It took a few months, but the Brookfield Zoo is finally getting a look at their new baby wombat.

The wombat joey was actually born back in February, but her mother kept her hidden in her pouch, much like a kangaroo's, until she was about six-and-a-half months old.

A wombat joey is only the size of a bumblebee when born, although now she weighs about ten pounds. Now, she is far too big to go back in her mother's pouch.

There are only nine Southern Hairy-Nosed wombats in North America.

In their native Australia, their species is threatened by loss of habitat, drought, and farming practices.
