American killed in combat in Iraq was Navy SEAL

- As the U.S. military expands its role in the northern part of Iraq, a U.S. Navy SEAL has died in what Defense Secretary Ash Carter says was a "combat death."

A U.S. defense official says the American was killed with small arms fire, suggesting that Islamic State fighters likely came within a few hundred yards of the U.S. forces.

The SEAL was among Americans advising Kurdish forces outside the city of Mosul, which is held by the Islamic State.

It was the third death of a U.S. service member in Iraq since the U.S.-led coalition launched its campaign against IS militants in the summer of 2014.
