Police: Elderly security guard in coma after brutal beating

An elderly security guard was beaten so badly, he had to be placed in a medically-induced coma.   Daytona Beach Police said a stranger lashed out when the guard told him he was not permitted to smoke in an area of an apartment complex that he was patrolling.

Police said after the suspect brutally beat 78-year-old Salvatore Genova, he took off, but later turned himself into authorities.

"It's kind of hard, and it hurts," said Shirley Harrell, a resident at the Mt. Carmel Homes apartment complex,  "and I pray that he gets better, but I don't know."

Harrell said Salvatore, or "Sal" to residents, was just doing his job to protect their complex and try to keep the peace.  Now, he in critical condition at Halifax Health Medical Center.

"He was really nice to all of us. He really did of he could for any of us."

On Friday night just after 9:30 p.m., Daytona Beach police officers responded to the apartments after they received a report of an injured person.  When they arrived, they found Genova bleeding and nearly unconscious.

The next morning, police said Jason Maduro turned himself in for the crime.  Maduro, 42, claimed the whole thing started when he left his apartment to smoke a cigarette and Genova confronted him.

"He's claiming that the security guard was trying to get his firearm out of his holster ," said Jimmie Flynt, Daytona Beach Police spokesman.

Genova suffered serious injuries, including a fractured hand, fractured ribs, and several facial fractures.  According to the police report, Maduro would not admit how badly he had hurt the man.

"It's obviously a brutal beating, and because we have not been able to interview the security guard, all we have to go on is what the defendant is saying," added Flynt.

At this point, Harrell said she just wants justice and is hoping Genova can pull through.

"He really demolished this man, and it was wrong. Nobody deserved that. Nobody."

Maduro is facing several aggravated battery charges and remains in the Volusia County Jail
