Man wanted for carjacking, kidnapping of child and disabled adult found dead in St. Petersburg

Polk County deputies said the man they were looking for after he carjacked a woman and kidnapped a baby and mentally disabled man inside was found dead in St. Petersburg, Saturday morning.

Deputies said around 5:30 p.m., Friday, 44-year-old Sloan Maybeck stole the car from a business in the Bartow area and took off with the 14-month-old and 30-year-old man inside.

The mother of the victims tried to stop Maybeck, but he sped off dragging her about 30 feet.  Deputies said he drove off heading west on State Road 60.

Deputies said they found the baby and man unharmed off Floral Avenue in Bartow after Maybeck stopped the car and ordered them out.

The car was found in Bradenton and deputies believe Maybeck left in another stolen car

Deputies said that Maybeck took his own life and that St. Petersburg police are conducting the death investigation.

"Maybeck had a violent past and it appears that violence led to his own death by his own hands.  He was facing serious criminal charges after stealing a car with a baby and a disabled adult inside.  Being concerned that his violent acts of desperation would result in more victims, a multi-jurisdiction search was conducted throughout the night.  Ultimately his irrational acts led to him taking his own life."  Sheriff Grady Judd.
