Deputies said around 10:30 p.m., Friday, a Ford Focus, driven by 38-year-old Christopher Ivey was sitting at a stoplight at Cypress Gardens Boulevard and Lake Ruby Drive in Winter Haven with his 4-year-old Jayden.
For unknown reasons, a Chevy Silverado was heading east on Cypress Gardens Blvd. driven by 61-year-old William Gainey, when he failed to stop at the light. Gainey hit the back of Ivey's car, deputies said.
Ivey's car went about 150 feet into a ditch. Witnesses tried to help, but deputies said both Ivey and his son, Jayden, died at the scene. Both were properly restrained, officials said.
Gainey was airlifted to Lakeland Regional Health Center with serious injuries and he was also wearing a seatbelt. Deputies said Gainey may have been impaired at the time of the accident.
This accident remains under investigation.
